{"id":39,"date":"2022-06-02T11:39:22","date_gmt":"2022-06-02T15:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www-bhs.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/guidance\/?page_id=39"},"modified":"2026-02-27T11:32:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T16:32:00","slug":"community-service","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www-bhs.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/guidance\/community-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Service\/Paid Work Hours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Community service or paid work hours are required for all <a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bright Futures Scholarship Awards<\/a>. \u00a0There is <strong>not<\/strong> a community service requirement for graduation.\u00a0 Students may begin logging community service\/work hours the summer before freshman year.\u00a0 Students should make sure to read the steps for volunteering below <strong>before<\/strong>\u00a0they start working on their community service.<\/p>\n<p>Students are allowed to combine paid work hours and community service hours to count towards the requirement for the Bright Futures Scholarship.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Documentation for Community Service\/Paid Work Hours:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>For students submitting hours from a school related volunteer activity, students should complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www-bhs.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/guidance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/09\/Community-Service-and-Reflection-Form-for-Hours-Completed-for-BHS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beachside HS Community Service Form<\/a> and turn it in with the reflection log attached.<\/li>\n<li>Students submitting hours from an outside-the-school related volunteer activity must submit a letter on letterhead from the organization that they completed the volunteer hours with that includes the student\u2019s service hours, type of service performed, who in the community the service benefited, dates, and supervisor signature.<\/li>\n<li>Students using paid work hours\u00a0 are required to submit pay stubs to have their hours counted.<\/li>\n<li>For hours completed on or after August 16, 2021, students must submit a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/guidance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2022\/07\/New-Bright-Futures-Community-Service-Form-St.-Johns-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reflection log<\/a>\u00a0for their Bright Futures Community Service Hours to be approved.\u00a0 This is for paid AND volunteer hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Steps for Students to Complete\u00a0<u>Prior<\/u>\u00a0to Volunteering<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Determine an area\/topic in the community where you would like to make an impact.<\/li>\n<li>Research the types of volunteer activities available in your community. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/guidance\/community-service\/\">district community service website<\/a> lists local opportunities and community service guidelines for St. Johns County School District.<\/li>\n<li>Contact the organization you are interested in volunteering with and determine 1) the steps to become a volunteer, 2) if they have volunteer openings for the dates\/activities you are interested in, 3) who the contact will be to verify your hours and participation in the activity.\u00a0<em>Note: Supervisor must be non-family member with organization who directly supervises the student during the activity outside of the home.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong style=\"font-size: 16px\">Steps for Students to Complete <u>During<\/u>\u00a0Volunteering<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep track of hours, dates, &amp; activities completed during service to verify with whoever supervises you during your community service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Steps for Students to Complete\u00a0<u>After<\/u>\u00a0Volunteering<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Have the supervisor of your service provide a signed letter on the organization\u2019s letterhead describing the type of service performed, who in the community the service benefited, and a description of the service event.\u00a0 Student and parent\/guardian should sign this letter.<\/li>\n<li>For paid work, student will need to submit a copy of their pay stub to the community service bin in the building 1 counseling office.<\/li>\n<li>Make a copy of all completed forms for your records.<\/li>\n<li>Student provides letterhead or pay stub and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/guidance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/142\/2022\/07\/New-Bright-Futures-Community-Service-Form-St.-Johns-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reflection log<\/a> to the community service bin in the building 1 counseling office with all required signatures included.<\/li>\n<li>Please allow 1 week for hours to be updated.\u00a0 Students may check their hours by logging in to HAC and clicking on the registration tab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Local Community Service Opportunities<\/h5>\n<p>Here are some ideas to help students find organizations for volunteer opportunities.\u00a0 Opportunities will also be posted on our School Counseling Schoology group;
